Thomas Friedman, Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times, recently quoted Hal Harvey in an article on U.S. energy production. Friedman points out that the growth in U.S. energy production, especially natural gas derived from “fracking,” coupled with reduced demand from higher efficiency standards for vehicles, brings the U.S. closer to energy self-sufficiency. He argues the U.S. might benefit from stable, but high, energy prices. Friedman also indicates that, for energy production costs to remain low, energy companies must adhere to strict environmental principles and come to an understanding with environmentalists.
