Hal Harvey Selected as One of The Weather Channel’s “Climate 25”

Energy Innovation CEO Hal Harvey was selected as one of The Weather Channel’s “Climate 25,” a group comprising 25 of the leading voices on how climate change impacts human security.

The Climate 25 includes a variety of voices—scientists, CEOs, military personnel, politicians—each with their own perspective on the challenges humans face due to increased climate change, and the opportunities ahead for creating a sustainable future.

In Hal’s interview, he describes energy is the crux of the climate change conversation, as it strongly pertains to all environmental, national security, and economic issues surrounding it. Carbon dioxide, the energy sector’s dominant greenhouse gas, will continue to alter Earth’s climate for centuries after it has been released, which means any mitigation efforts must start today.

Although energy is a major contributor to the climate change problem, it can also be part of the solution. The cost of clean energy technologies have rapidly declined within the last several years. These technological advances demonstrate that a low-carbon future is possible, and at no sacrifice to the economy. “We can basically eliminate pollution from the planet, and the cost is approximately the same as continuing on a high pollution path.”

While some industries maintain a vested interest in continuing to use the dirtiest energy sources—coal, oil, and gas— it is in the world’s best interest to get on a path to eliminating carbon pollution.

The Climate 25 was created as a demonstration of The Weather Channel’s commitment to reporting on the science, which overwhelmingly concludes that climate change is occurring, humans are a large cause of it, and that we need to prepare for its effects.
